The first time I visited Mandai in Singapore, I thought of it mainly as a destination for wildlife and nature experiences. After entering the area in the morning, most of my attention was focused on the greenery and animals around me. It was only after several hours of walking and exploring that I started to feel hungry and realized that food could also become an important part of the Mandai experience.
Unlike exploring restaurants in central Singapore, eating at Mandai feels more like taking a relaxing break during a day of nature exploration. After walking for a while, sitting down for something to eat or a cold drink before continuing with the next activity feels incredibly refreshing. After visiting several times, I also discovered that Mandai offers more than simple snacks and fast food. There are desserts, drinks, Asian flavors, and Western-style options to choose from.
If I were recommending a few options worth trying, I would start with Ben & Jerry’s, Blackball, Cavern Restaurant, Chimi’s, Copper Chimney, and Egg Splash Café. Each has a different style, so whether I want a dessert, a quick break, or a proper meal, I can find something that suits the moment.
Ben & Jerry’s: A Cool Treat for a Hot Day
Singapore can be quite hot, so whenever I explore Mandai, I find myself craving ice cream much more than usual. After spending an entire morning outdoors, something cold and sweet can be surprisingly satisfying.
For me, Ben & Jerry’s is a great option for a relaxing break during the day. There are different flavors to choose from, and I usually prefer to have it in the afternoon as a small reward during my trip. If I have already enjoyed a substantial lunch, I normally choose a smaller portion and take my time eating it while resting.
When I am traveling around Mandai, I don’t think dessert is necessarily about filling me up. Instead, it gives me a chance to slow down. I can enjoy a few spoonfuls of ice cream, look through the photos I have taken, and decide where I want to go next. That short break can make the rest of the day much more enjoyable.
Blackball: A Great Choice for Asian-Style Desserts
While Ben & Jerry’s gives me more of a Western-style ice cream experience, Blackball feels much more like an Asian dessert option.
I personally enjoy desserts with different textures, so ingredients such as brown sugar pearls, grass jelly, and taro balls immediately catch my attention. When I first tried Blackball, I found it very different from regular ice cream. The combination of different toppings creates both sweetness and a variety of textures.
At Mandai, where I may spend hours walking around, I think Blackball is particularly suitable for an afternoon break. When the weather is hot, a chilled dessert can quickly help me cool down and recharge.
When traveling with friends, I also like ordering different combinations and sharing them. It gives everyone a chance to try more flavors without making the afternoon feel too rushed.
Cavern Restaurant: Where I Like to Enjoy a Proper Lunch
After spending a long morning walking around Mandai, I usually don’t want to rely only on snacks. I prefer to sit down and enjoy a proper meal, and Cavern Restaurant is one of the options I would consider.
For me, it works well as a proper meal stop during a full day of sightseeing. Lunch is not just about satisfying my hunger; it is also a chance to rest, recharge, and think about how I want to spend the afternoon.

If I plan to continue exploring Mandai afterward, I usually look for something filling enough to give me energy for the rest of the day. Being able to sit down and enjoy a meal also gives my legs a much-needed break instead of forcing myself to eat quickly while continuing to walk.
I think this is something that is easy to overlook when visiting Mandai. The different nature and wildlife areas require quite a bit of walking, so planning a proper lunch can make the afternoon much more comfortable.
Chimi’s: A Chance to Try Something Different
When I travel for several days, I don’t like eating similar foods at every meal. Singapore has such a diverse food culture that I would rather use the opportunity to try different flavors and styles.
Chimi’s gives me that sense of variety. Its flavors feel different from traditional Singaporean dishes, so after spending a morning exploring Mandai, it can be a nice change of pace.
I particularly enjoy this kind of contrast during a trip. I might spend the morning surrounded by greenery and observing wildlife, then sit down for a meal with a completely different flavor profile. It makes the overall travel experience feel more varied.
When traveling with friends, I also like sharing different dishes. That way, everyone can taste more options without ordering too much food.
Copper Chimney: Worth Considering If You Enjoy Indian Cuisine
Singapore is a multicultural destination, so besides familiar dishes such as Hainanese chicken rice and laksa, I also enjoy trying food influenced by different cultures.
Copper Chimney is an option I would consider when I am in the mood for Indian flavors. What I enjoy most about Indian cuisine is the depth of its spices. Different spices combine to create distinctive aromas, while dishes featuring curry, grilled meats, and rice offer plenty of variety.
After spending a full day exploring Mandai, I would consider Copper Chimney if I wanted a more substantial and flavorful meal. Compared with having a dessert in the afternoon, a complete meal like this feels more suitable after a long day of outdoor activities.
I also prefer to eat Indian food slowly. The different sauces and spices can create subtle changes in flavor, and taking my time allows me to appreciate the food more.
Egg Splash Café: A Convenient Way to Start the Day
If I plan to start my Mandai adventure early, I would pay attention to options such as Egg Splash Café for breakfast or a light meal.
Breakfast is actually quite important to me when traveling. If I start a day of walking without eating anything, I often find myself losing energy before lunchtime. That’s why I prefer to have something light and easy to eat before beginning a long day of exploration.
Egg-based dishes work particularly well for breakfast or brunch because they can provide a satisfying amount of energy without feeling too heavy first thing in the morning. If I know I am going to spend most of the day at Mandai, I prefer to have a comfortable breakfast before dedicating the rest of my time to wildlife and nature.
Sometimes, a good breakfast can set the mood for the entire day. Sitting down, having something to eat and a drink, and starting the day at a relaxed pace feels much better to me than rushing straight into sightseeing.

How I Would Plan a Food-Focused Day at Mandai
After visiting several times, I would not try to fit all of these foods into one meal. Instead, I prefer to plan my food stops around the natural rhythm of the day.
If I arrive early, I would start with Egg Splash Café for breakfast or a light meal before beginning my nature exploration. Since I usually have the most energy in the morning, I would use that time for wildlife observation and outdoor activities.
Around lunchtime, after several hours of walking, I would choose Cavern Restaurant and give myself enough time to properly sit down and rest. If I wanted something with a different flavor profile, Chimi’s or Copper Chimney would also be options I would consider.
Afternoon is when I most enjoy having dessert. On a hot day, eating Ben & Jerry’s after a long walk feels incredibly refreshing. Alternatively, I might choose an Asian-style dessert from Blackball for something with a different texture and flavor.
If I plan to continue with evening activities at Mandai, I would also think about dinner in advance rather than waiting until I become extremely hungry. This helps me maintain my energy and prevents food stops from disrupting the rest of my itinerary.
For me, one of the most appealing things about Mandai is the way nature, wildlife, and food can naturally become part of the same travel experience. When I visit Mandai again, I will still think ahead about what I want to eat, but I won’t make my schedule too rigid. Maybe I will have a simple breakfast in the morning, enjoy a proper meal at lunchtime, and reward myself with ice cream or dessert in the afternoon.
Travel should not be only about sightseeing and checking places off a list. Being able to slow down, enjoy good food, take a break, and then continue exploring is what makes a day at Mandai feel memorable to me.
